Challenge

The constant drive for optimising logistics operations, to address environmental concerns, and at the same time improve cost and service quality, has motivated the Physical Internet (PI) as a new way to match demand dynamically to available logistic resources. PI builds on automation influencing logistics at different levels (navigation, enhanced communications, warehouse automation).

Approach

Living Labs

ICONET carried out research and development of the PI concept, as a new networked architecture for interconnected logistics hubs that combined with IoT capabilities, allows shipments to be routed towards final destination automatically, by using collaborative decisions inspired by the information centric networking paradigm, optimizing efficiency and customer service levels across the whole network.
The PI paradigm can underpin many logistics models. In ICONET we have selected the following application areas of PI: Warehousing as a service; E-commerce fulfillment as a service; Synchromodality as a service.
